Can I Plug In Solar is built and run by one person, Jose Pollman. It answers two questions for renters, condo owners and homeowners in the US: is plug-in (balcony) solar legal in your state, and what would a kit on your balcony, patio or yard actually save?

States have been passing plug-in solar laws quickly since 2025. Most coverage of them quotes one statewide savings figure. But a north-facing railing and a south-facing patio can differ several times over, and a kit only saves money on power your home uses while the sun is up. So this tool runs an hourly model for your direction, tilt and utility rate, and shows how much of the output you'd simply give away.

Everything it uses is public: the US Census Geocoder, NLR PVWatts, the OpenEI Utility Rate Database and EIA price data. State laws are checked against the statutes and dated. See how we calculate and how the site is paid for.
