Privacy
Short version: we don't keep your address, we don't set tracking cookies, and your meter file never leaves your browser.
Your address
When you enter a street address, our server passes it to the US Census Bureau's geocoder to find its coordinates and state, then discards it. It is not stored, cached or logged, and it never appears in a URL. ZIP codes are looked up in a copy of Census data on our own server.
From then on we only use coordinates rounded to about 1 km. Those rounded coordinates are sent to NLR PVWatts (solar output), OpenEI (utility rates) and the Census Bureau (state and city), and appear in the result link so you can share it.
Meter files
A Green Button file you add is read in your browser only and never uploaded to us or anyone else. Utility exports often include your name and address at the top; those lines are skipped and not kept. The hourly readings are kept in this browser tab's session storage (cleared when you close the tab, or with "Remove meter file") so the result page can use them. Analytics only records that a file was added and its format and interval.
Analytics
We count page views and a few events (for example "a check was run" or "the rate was edited") with a self-hosted copy of Umami, sent from our server. It sets no cookies. We record the page path, not its query string, so coordinates never reach analytics; referrers are cut to the site and path. Events carry only a state code, a kit size or similar, never an address, location or meter data.
Your IP address
Your IP address is used briefly to limit how many lookups one visitor can make per minute (counters expire after a minute), and Umami uses it with a daily-changing salt to count unique visitors without storing it.
Browser storage
If you use the light/dark switch, your choice is saved in your browser's local storage under theme. A meter file's readings sit in session storage as described above. Nothing else is stored.
Who is responsible
Can I Plug In Solar is run by Boris Žunko, Hoče Slivnica, Slovenia. The server is in the EU (Hetzner, Finland). Under the GDPR you can ask what we hold about you and have it deleted; in practice we hold nothing that identifies you.
